1880s Victorian Blue Enamel Locket, 14k Gold, Etched Star and Seed Pearl Detail
This gorgeous enamel locket can be dated specifically to the 1880s with the help of an original handwritten note that remains perfectly intact beneath the glass inside. The note reads “1885 John to Iva” on the left side and “A Merry X-Mas Iva” on the right side. The front of the locket is decorated with a five pointed star etched into the gold and bordered in black enamel. The center of the star is carved more deeply and set with a small natural pearl. Gold hallmarks are possibly hidden beneath the written notes inside but the exposed metal does test strongly for 14k. The dimensions are 1-1/16” by 7/8”. There are only two very minor blemishes to the enamel that are in conveniently discreet places and worn smooth from age. On the inside, one of the original glass windows has long since been broken but continues to hold firmly in place. So overall the locket is in rather remarkable condition considering it is at least 133 years old! In the photos I have it paired with a contemporary 14k 18” chain which can be purchased separately.
