Rare Seven Day Shell Cameo Bracelet
Until I found this piece I had never seen or even heard of a "seven day" cameo bracelet! So the seven different images, each depicting a chariot in some form or another, really intrigued me. In my research I learned that each image represents the mythology behind how the days of the week acquired their given names. So interesting!! I did find a few other examples out there but honestly, none quite as fine or ornately framed as this one. The plaques are hand carved shell with a beautiful contrast between the stark white of the images and the pinky-peach of the background. The carver had a tremendous skill in acquiring a ghostly effect where in some areas the white layer is so thin that it is almost transparent. Each cameo is set into an elaborate silver frame with millegrain borders, beveled edges and ten little marcasites. The first cameo in line doubles as the clasp with the mechanism soldered discreetly underneath. This gives the bracelet a continuity when it's worn showing no visible end or beginning. The full length of the bracelet is approximately 7-1/2" with the width measuring 6/8". This is just such a wonderful little work of art with an interesting story that's sure to spark curiosity and conversation!
