Antique Carved Sardonyx Cameo 18k Ring
This beautiful, classical cameo was carved during the Victorian era. The carver used a pretty piece of sardonyx that has a color range from white to plum to amber. The skill of the craftsman is obvious in the fine details that make up this aristocratic lady's portrait. Her hair is upswept, softened with several cascading tendrils and a thin gauzy veil that falls behind her. She has a lovely profile with delicate, feminine features and realistic proportions. Her dress has a sweeping open neckline with a subtle resemblance to Ancient Greek or Roman attire. The coloring is quite beautiful as the lady is nearly pure white which contrasts nicely against the plum background. The stone measures 12mm by 10mm with a depth of approximately 3.5mm. The cameo is mounted in a solid 18k yellow gold mounting. She is held securely in place by twelve sturdy prongs that are spaced out evenly with a superb open scallop shape between each. The shoulders are deeply carved with a simple design that serves as a framing feature when you look straight down at the ring. The mounting has a nice weight to it and is certainly the perfect no-fuss way to proudly showcase such a lovely cameo. The shank is flat inside where it sits against your finger and domed on the outside. At the shoulders it measures 4mm and gradually tapers to 2mm at the base. Currently the ring is a size 4-3/4 and can be sized up or down upon request. There are no hallmarks present but the gold does test accordingly for 18k.
