Antique Hand Carved Roman Warrior Cameo Earrings
Rarely do I get excited over cameos. However, these Victorian hand carved shells are a fantastic exception! First of all, the size is wonderful. Each earring measures an impressive 1” by 3/4” with an excellent proportion of portrait to background. Then secondly, the quality and level of skill is astounding! Each of the two warrior-like figures is unique with their facial features being very fine, very attractive and quite realistic. Notice also how successfully the carver was able to represent thin, gauzy wisps of feather and the level of care taken to depict the varied details in each of their helmets. The sterling silver frames are close-backed with tightly fitting bezels and curved wires at the top. The back of each shows signs of having been converted at some point, possibly from collar buttons, yet the remnants have long since been filed smooth and in no way detract from the beauty of the earrings. Another detail worth mentioning is that the figures face one another. This is quite desirable among collectors and is a key feature of cameos from this era. Simply put, these are truly works of art, beautifully executed and in remarkable condition.
