Magnificent Victorian Onyx and 14k Gold Mourning Jewelry Set
This Victorian set is absolutely stunning. Crafted out of 14k gold and shiny, smooth black onyx it's the fanciest mourning jewelry I've ever seen! The design is strong and elegant and although these pieces are nearing 150 years old they are remarkably current. Aside from the design being incredible, all three pieces have amazing construction! The central inverted triangular pieces are solid 14k gold with impressively perfect enamel work and a wonderful hand carved treatment on the edges. There are three loops at the point of each triangle from which hang little onyx beads. Suspended from behind the triangles, and held securely with a discreet gold rivet, are the beautiful pear-shaped pendants. Along the full length of the very edge of each pendant runs a delicate 14k gold rim. At the base of each gold rim are five gold loops from which hang five more little onyx beads. The eight beads on each piece move and dance around giving this jewelry set a great sense of life and movement. The ear pendants are suspended from simple onyx studs which are set with a gold bead detail in the center and are fitted with 14k gold screw back mechanisms. The screws thread open and closed smoothly and can be adjusted by hand to fit your ear as tightly or as loosely as is comfortable. If preferred, and upon request, I can have the earrings converted to have posts for pierced ears. Please just message me to discuss the options. The brooch has a small hidden bale in the back which allows you to wear it as a pendant...like getting two pieces in one! Like I said earlier, the construction is really remarkable. Each separate element is connected to the next part with a seamless joint or tiny rivet or hidden hinge. This set was clearly from a high end jeweler or top-of-the-line establishment. No detail was spared! Overall the group is in excellent condition. A few of the points of the little dangles have become blunt over time. Only one is obvious but even so it is not so noticeable as to detract from the overall impression. If that one dangle in particular is a deal-breaker for you please let me know. I'd be happy to seek out a jeweler that could replicate the little bead. For the time being though I prefer to leave the set in its original condition as the group is really quite rare.
The sizes are as follows:
Earrings from center of onyx stud to bottom of center dangling bead is 2-1/2". Pear shaped pendant at widest point is 1-1/8".
Brooch/pendant from uppermost perched onyx bead to bottom of lowest dangling beads is 2-7/8". Pear shaped pendant at widest point is 1-1/8". Pin mechanism from hinge to clasp is 1-1/2". Span of onyx arch at widest point is 1-7/8".
*As a side note: I feel it's important to keep this particular set together, therefore I've priced it as a group. But I realize it may be helpful to understand the price in regards to if they were individual listings. So separate prices would break down like this...earrings $1875 and brooch/pendant $975. Keep in mind that this is just for reference (for research, price comparisons etc) and not as an offer to purchase them individually!
