Early Egyptian Revival Micro Mosaic Scarab Brooch, 18k Gold, Circa 1890

2,350.00

Here is an exceptional example of fine Italian micro mosaic work crafted in the late 1800s in the Egyptian revival style. Featuring a beautifully detailed scarab beetle motif, a quintessential Egyptian theme. The mosaic is set into a rich 18k hand carved mounting with tapered heavy gold drops and two small festoon chains. The back is closed, solid and fitted with a sturdy 3/4” long pin mechanism. The overall measurements are 1-1/4” at the widest point from left to right and 2-3/8” from the peak to the tip of the lowest hanging drop. The mosaic alone measures 13/16”. With hints of metallic reflecting the light, the saturated colors of the tiny glass tesserae used to create the scarab stand out dramatically against the stark white background. And the slender hanging drops add a wonderful eye catching movement. A superior piece of antique jewelry in remarkable condition. Hardly noticeable but important to mention is a very tiny section of white tiles missing just to the left of the scarab’s head. Take your time looking through all the photos as they show the minute details and the amount of thought that the jeweler put into designing and crafting this piece. Truly a work of art and an incredible piece of history.
