1920s Art Deco Mandalian Mesh Purse
This Art Deco purse was made right around 1920 by the Mandalian Manufacturing Company. They were based in Massachusetts and were quite well known in the early 20th century for their colorful and stylish enameled mesh handbags. This example is very fine showcasing a dramatic black and gold pattern over a stark ivory background. The bottom terminates in a zig-zag fringe effect with a tapered black bead hanging from each of the ten points. The stunning silver tone frame is double sided with a highly detailed pierced floral design that wraps completely around the upper portion of the bag. Perched atop the frame is a decorative clasp which features an elegant bird on either side of a pretty little flower-shaped button. The interior has its original pale silk lining which is in excellent condition with no stains or tears to mention. The chain handle measures 12-1/2" inches which is an ideal length for holding in your hand but also long enough to rest comfortably in the crook of your arm. The outer dimensions of the purse itself are 4-1/4" across the frame, 4" across the mesh, and 8" long from the frame to the tip of the dangling beads. The condition is very good to excellent with only very minor wear to the black surface on a few of the dangling beads. This is a wonderful example of American Art Deco and would be a fantastic addition to any deco or handbag collection.
