Art Nouveau Era English Sterling Silver Butterfly Wing Brooch
By far, this is the prettiest and most unusual example of antique butterfly wing jewelry I’ve encountered! The genuine butterfly wings rest in wing-shaped sterling silver setting and are protected under thick, gently curved glass. The body of the butterfly is also sterling and has a very fine, realistic texture. It’s rather unusual to find antique butterfly wing jewelry in the actual butterfly shape...but what’s even more rare is the fact that this one has double sectioned wings! And, on top of that, the 2-3/8” wingspan is especially unusual! The back is fully hallmarked with “Sterling England” in two places and “sterling silver” in another. The pin mechanism measures 1-3/4” from the “c” catch to the hinge and it holds very securely when in place. The measurement across the lowest point of the bottom wing sections is approximately 3/4” and the length of the body from the highest antenna to the tip of it’s tail is approximately 1”. A stunning piece in excellent condition made even better by its rarity!
