Unbelievable 19th Century Cut Steel and Paste Pendant
This cut steel medallion is utterly astounding! Over the years I've seen plenty of cut steel jewelry...mostly buttons and buckles and the occasional earrings or necklace. But I have never seen anything like this pendant. The design is exceptional as it perfectly combines strength and beauty. The lines give shape to shells, swirls and feather-like motifs that are studded with faceted steel and enhanced with delicate, tiny beaded details. The close-backed stones are paste and are in shades that represent emerald, ruby and pink tourmaline. This piece likely dates to the mid 1800s and is in remarkable condition. All of the cut steel pieces are securely in place, none are missing and there is no rust. The patina is quite perfect as well...just the right amount of contrast and highlights to show the depth and texture. The back of the medallion is a dark gun metal and also has a very nice, natural patina. The diameter is an impressive 2-1/4". It hangs from a simple 15" sterling chain.
