Circa 1920 Beaded Fringe Collar Necklace
This necklace has such a regal look! It is unmarked but very much in line with what was being produced in Czechoslovakia in the 'teens, 'twenties and 'thirties. The style, design and overall feel of this particular piece leads me to estimate it was made around 1920 or even a little earlier. The necklace is comprised of a continuous length of 28 gorgeous little brass links, each one connected to the next by way of two small loops at the uppermost corners. These Art Nouveau style links are quite solid with a nice weight and a very perfect natural patina that highlights the scallop-like design. Each link is embellished with a saw-tooth bezel set "Russian Amethyst" faceted crystal and a lovely matching glass bead that dangles freely from the bottom. When the necklace is on it drapes effortlessly over the collarbone, allowing the glass beads to fall like fringe. The overall length from end to end is 13-1/4" while each link measures 15/16" long from the very top to the bottom of the bead. The clasp is a simple 1920s spring ring which functions properly, holding securely when closed. In the end, this necklace is an impressive piece of finely made costume jewelry from an utterly romantic era that has survived in remarkable condition! An excellent addition to any vintage jewelry collection yet certainly quite wearable...day or night!
