Extremely Rare Calvaire Jeweled Powder Compact
When I got this compact I knew it was good! But to be perfectly honest, I had it in my shop for quite some time before I looked at it close enough to notice a tiny hallmark on the inside. The name indicated is Calvaire and according to my research their pieces are exceedingly rare and therefore quite collectible. In fact, a quote I read stated that Calvaire pieces are "so rare that any piece could be a one chance in a life-time to purchase"! That made me say "Wow" out loud! I did find one other identical compact (with the jewels in a different color) and for sure the asking price was extreme. My style however is to keep things affordable so although it looks like I could charge a small fortune for this treasure, I will not! The condition is very, very good with only minor surface wear to the back and a slight dip along the bottom edge. I'm calling it a dip because it's not exactly a dent but still an issue I ought to mention. The mirror is perfect and the jewels are perfect. They are a pinkish cranberry color and seem to light up when viewed at an angle. The lid lifts manually, not on a spring mechanism. And it holds tightly when closed. The signature is very small and can be found on the inside along the rim of the mirror. Calvaire was based in NYC in the 1930s and 40s and imported fine products, often from Europe and France in particular. My instincts say this piece is French. It's so classy and beautiful and actually very functional. The lid is 2-3/4" across. The box portion is 2-1/2" across and has a depth of nearly 1/2". (7/16" to be specific) What a stunning piece to round out a compact collection!
