Victorian Era Bacchus Shell Cameo Brooch, Exquisitely Carved!
This Victorian era cameo is a lovely depiction of Bacchus or Dionysus, the Roman God of wine. Recognizable by loosely upswept hair tangled with grape vines this example was very finely carved by hand with an exquisite attention to the smallest details. The draping of the cloth, the texture of the wispy tendrils and the overall precision of the facial features combine to make this a rather beautiful cameo. The frame is simple and just right with a fitted bezel cinched with a delicate twisted rope detail. The cameo itself measures 29mm by 36mm and the outer dimension of the frame is 1-3/8” by 1-5/8”. The back is fitted with a pin mechanism that measures 1-1/8” long from the hinge to the clasp. There is also hidden bale that swivels upwards to accommodate a chain making the brooch wearable as a pendant as well as a brooch. There is a small 14k hallmark on the clasp.
