Stunning oversized Onyx mourning ring with natural pearl starburst
This ring is an absolute show-stopper. Never before have I seen such an elegant and striking antique statement ring! It dates to the turn of the last century, circa 1900, and was likely worn by a Victorian woman to symbolize that she was in a period of mourning. Glossy black onyx and pretty natural pearls were popular materials for mourning jewelry and indeed are a timeless combination. This tremendous piece of onyx has a sleek, beveled edge and slightly concave depression in the center. The hand carved gold and seed pearl starburst in turn is slightly convex which creates a subtle three-dimensional quality as it lays over the onyx. The ring is bordered by a dramatic series of gold loops and beads. Each shoulder has a larger gold bead nestled in the split where the shank meets the ring. The measurement north to south, including the outermost loops on each end, is an impressive 44mm or 1-3/4". The width is 21mm. The height of the onyx as it rises above your finger is approximately 8mm and the uppermost surface of the starburst adds an additional 3mm. Currently the ring is a size 6 and can be sized up or down upon request.
