Mid-Century Modern Aksel Holmsen Sterling Silver Pendant
This minimal, mid century modern necklace was designed circa 1960 by Norwegian artist Aksel Holmsen. It is a very simple shape with some pretty complex features. Overall, the geometry of the pendant itself is like a flat, exaggerated teardrop or a paddle of some sort. The two flared sides gently peak as they come together to meet at the center, creating a vertical spine-like idea. Creating optical interest is a shallow concave disc that rests centered between the flared sides. There is a very narrow opening at the top where a 17" sterling snake chain runs through. The pendant is clearly signed on the back with "NORWAY", "STERLING" and the Aksel Holmsen signature. From top to bottom the pendant measures 2-1/8" long. The measurement at the widest point is just over 1-1/2". The chain is not the original but is a suitable match and is included in the price. This is super cool modernist piece that is very wearable! It's very eye catching and almost hypnotic! The way light reflects on the two flared sides in contrast with the shadowy slope alongside the spine combined with the magical effect of the concave disc come together to create a pretty genius design! Simple and complex at the same time.
