Art Deco Elgin Guilloche Enamel Dance Compact
This excellent, early Elgin American compact is in superb condition! It's from the 1920s and has the most gorgeous pale green guilloché enamel plaque applied to the front. It has wonderful deco lines and a sweet little feminine flower bouquet in the center. The compact itself is a silver tone metal, it is not marked as sterling and does not test as sterling, yet it cleaned up nice and bright with only very minor signs of wear. It is fitted with a 9-3/4" chain which is what classifies it as a "dance compact". Back in the day, ladies would like to take their compact with them to the dance floor so they could easily scurry off for touch-ups between songs! So this type of compact is what they would prefer since it has a chain strap for hanging on your wrist or tucking in the crook of your elbow. The inside of the compact is in remarkable condition: the mirror is spotless and remains in place and the removable make-up compartment is very, very clean. In fact, it is quite usable still! All you need to do is lift the make-up compartment, fill the inside of the compact with your own loose powder and then snap the piece back in place. There is a wheel that turns, allowing you to alternate between zones that are completely closed, perforated or completely open. You can then just use a simple powder puff from the drug store and voila! Fancy compact! The smaller well was originally for rouge but you can use it for whatever you like...maybe a fluffy little powder puff would tuck right in there! The measurements are 2-5/8" wide, 1-3/4" tall and 3/8" deep. This is an excellent deco accessory! Perfect for a Gatsby themed party or a bride having a vintage inspired wedding: a beautiful and functional contender for the "something old" category!
